A Recent Trend of Scientific Productivity University Scientists: An Analysis of Their Contribution to Scientific Publications

The number of Japanese university scientists appeared in the 1978 edition of the Current Bibliographic Directory of the Arts & Sciences was counted, and was analyzed by their subject specialities and by their university affiliations, in order to grasp the recent trend of their contributions these two aspects.

The source data contained 394,893 scientists, identified from 514,318 journal citations and 50,150 non-journal citations. Among them there were 12,191 Japanese scientists affiliated to 344 different universities and colleges. They were grouped by subject and the results were as follows: 4,973 names in health sciences (40.79%), 4,331 physical sciences (35.53%), 1,675 engineering sciences (13.74%), 968 agricultural sciences (7.94%), 84 other natural sciences (O.69%), and 160 social sciences & humanities (1.31%). The fields which had a large number of those contributing authors were life science, clinical medicine, physical and chemical science, and engineering and technology.

The names of the universities of greater productivity in scientific research were: University of Tokyo (1,199 scientists), Kyoto University (919), Osaka University (837), Tohoku University (633), Kyushu University (534), Hokkaido University (486), Nagoya University (483), and Tokyo Institute of Technology (409).

A trend of the great majority of research activities is being carried on by the scientists of the ex-Teidais (ex-Imperial universities) group was found out.
